SELF-GUIDED WALKING
The area is defined as a free-walking zone, so you are free to roam outside of set trails (there aren’t any!) while exploring the Central Plateau Conservation Area.
Whether you explore for 30-minutes a few hours, or a day - the Lodge is your base to come home to. Guests are also treated with daytime access to the Lodges’ private hut - Ibbott’s Hut. A place to enjoy a picnic lunch, wade in the shoreline waters of an alpine beach, read, relax and unwind - the perfect Highland experience!
Guests enjoy experiencing the diversity of the Plateau. 4,000 - 7,000-year-old Lunettes, alpine beaches, lakes and lagoons, pencil pines … your day will be your own to explore as you choose as you safely experience the Plateaus diverse landscape.
Our knowledgeable staff are also able to provide advice and suggestions to help you make the best choice based on your experience, skills, ability, and particularly …… the weather!
Sturdy footwear, layers and rain jackets are recommended for all seasons.

FISHING
If fishing is your passion or you want to experience catching your first Tasmanian fighting trout, you have the choice of a Thousand Lakes to try your luck in Australia’s premier wild trout fishery.
Tasmania's wild brown trout from the Western Lakes area are arguably the purest strain in the world, given Tasmania remains disease free and has ample water supply to feed our lakes and waterways. They are known to be cunning and full of fight to test the most experienced angler.
Many of the larger lakes have access to launch your boat as well.

PHOTOGRAPHY
A magical, ancient glacial landscape of dolerite, alpine lakes and tarns, 4,000-year-old lunettes - the everchanging colours of the Central Plateau Conservation Area, located in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, provide countless photo opportunities for every level of photographer from beginner through to advanced.
Guests of the Lodge, planning to conduct photography or filming for commercial purposes, within the Central Plateau Conservation Area and/or Lodge surrounds, will require a Commercial Filming and Photography License, in accordance with Parks and Wildlife regulations. Confirmation of the approval is required prior to arrival.

Thousand Lakes Wilderness Lodge is the perfect place to relax, unwind and escape.
Retreat to one of our luxurious couches: read, gaze out the windows, play board-games or cards, engage in conversation or slip into lodge life and have a nap. You are welcome to do as little or as much as you like!
The Lodge is your piece of highlands luxury. Your “home away from home”.

DARK SKIES, STARGAZING & AURORAS
Tasmania has some of the darkest skies in the world and the Central Plateau Conservation Area is characterised by flat, expansive plains and thousands of lakes carved out by glacial movement over millions of years.
Unobstructed horizon views make the plateau an ideal area for viewing the Southern Lights (Aurora Borealis), although the Tasmanian aurora spectacle is somewhat elusive so we can’t commit to when the solar winds will make it shine the brightest!
The night sky on any clear night offers an ever-changing display of fascinating objects you can see, from stars and constellations to bright planets, the moon, and sometimes special events. Sit amongst nature on the outdoor viewing deck or gaze in wonder through a choice of two amateur telescopes or binoculars.
E-BIKES
Explore the western lakes area of the Central Plateau Area on our e-bikes, with no engine noise, it will be just you and nature as you explore further along Lake Augusta Road.
Electric Bike hire is:
