SELF-GUIDED WALKING

The area is defined as a free-walking zone, so you are free to roam outside of set trails (there aren’t any!) while exploring the Central Plateau Conservation Area.

Whether you explore for 30-minutes a few hours, or a day - the Lodge is your base to come home to. Guests are also treated with daytime access to Ibbott’s Hut, a private place to swim, enjoy a packed picnic lunch, read and unwind - the perfect Highland experience!

Maps and track notes for walks of varying ease and duration are available at the Lodge. Our knowledgeable staff will provide advice and suggestions to help you make the best choice based on your experience, skills, ability, and particularly …… the weather!

Sturdy footwear, gaiters, layers and rain jackets are recommended for all seasons.

FISHING

If fishing is your passion or you want to experience catching your first Tasmanian fighting trout, you have the choice of a Thousand Lakes to try your luck in Australia’s premier wild trout fishery.

Tasmania's wild brown trout from the Western Lakes area are arguably the purest strain in the world, given Tasmania remains disease free and has ample water supply to feed our lakes and waterways.  They are known to be cunning and full of fight to test the most experienced angler.

Many of the larger lakes have access to launch your boat as well.

Thousand Lakes Wilderness Lodge is the perfect place to relax, unwind and escape.

Retreat to one of our luxurious couches: read, gaze out the windows, play board-games or cards, engage in conversation or slip into lodge life and have a nap. You are welcome to do as little or as much as you like!

DARK SKIES, STARGAZING & AURORAS

Tasmania has some of the darkest skies in the world and the Tasmanian Highlands Central Plateau is characterised by flat, expansive plains and thousands of lakes carved out by glacial movement over millions of years.

Unobstructed horizon views make the plateau an ideal area for viewing the Southern Lights (Aurora Borealis), although the Tasmanian aurora spectacle is somewhat elusive so we can’t commit to when the solar winds will make it shine the brightest!

The night sky on any clear night offers an ever-changing display of fascinating objects you can see, from stars and constellations to bright planets, the moon, and sometimes special events. Sit amongst nature on the outdoor viewing deck or gaze in wonder through a choice of two amateur telescopes or binoculars.
